40 Second Flat Top Test

by W. Kissel and P. Allcorn

The plot below is a data logger plot during the 40 sec FT test. (temperature probes were connected to mlam #3 & #4 supply and returns) Jim Walton applied temperature sensing 'tapes' to MLAM and the other Lambertsons. The CYAN and YELLOW traces are return temperatures from MESON Lambertson #3 and #4. The RED trace is the super cycle time. The GREEN trace is the "end of flat top" time.

The test was started with a cycle time of 60.7 seconds (same as last run) with the end of flat top at 42.7 seconds.

The cycle time was then changed to 80.7 seconds in preparation for extending the end of FT.

Testing ran for two hours @ 40 second FT.

The plot below shows the temperature cycle for MLAM #3 & #4 @ 30 seconds. (V100 is shown as a reference -> ran out of plot channels at MLAM MADC)

Below are the supply and return temps on MLAM #3 & #4.

(Notice the return temperature increase during the 2 hour test.) MLAM #4 supply and return LCW lines are "tee'd" with Q302. #4 has reduced flow.

Here is a memo from Jim Walton:

The recent extended flattop run gave the following results:
Three temperature tapes on each magnet- top coil return, bottom coil return &
manifold (sum of both coils).

PLAM 1-7 all less than 54 C (130 F) except for
A) PLAM 1 top coil between 54C and 60C (140 F).
B) PLAM 4 bottom coil between 54C & 60C
                manifold between 54C & 60C.

(PLAM supply tripped on average overcurrent during test)

MLAM 1-8 and muLAM 1-3 , all tapes between 54C & 60C.
Supply water=30C (86F), from Wally K.
Note that under normal operating conditions the supply water is nominally
95F and
can be 100F, so the temperature ranges given must be increased by at least 14F.

Jim

PLAM tripped on average power @ 35 seconds. (PLAM's AVE PWR circuit needs to be calibrated as temperature tapes and cable power ratings appear to be OK) Paul Allcorn reported that only one of the Fixed Target Beamline Supplies tripped off. (A supply in the NT line, not to be run for next fixed target run) The return temperatures for the Fixed Target Beamlines increased about 2 degrees C.

It is my opinion that a longer duration test should be conducted next summer. - Wally Kissel
